Connect Chat Security
How your messages are secured when chatting with nearby users on the Connect radar.
The Connect radar is built to help you meet people nearby for spontaneous real-world interactions—like grabbing a coffee, going for a walk, or starting a quick conversation.
Because Connect is designed for introductions between people who do not know each other yet, it uses a separate, lightweight messaging system that works differently than your main UTurn conversations.
How Connect Chats are Secured
Connect chats are encrypted while moving. This means that when you message someone from the Connect grid, your text is scrambled and protected while traveling across the internet between your phone and their phone. No one can snoop on your conversation over public Wi-Fi or mobile networks.
However, Connect chats are not end-to-end encrypted.
Why Connect Chats Aren’t End-to-End Encrypted
We keep the security model for Connect straightforward and practical:
- No Secrets with Strangers: Connect chats are strictly meant for breaking the ice, introducing yourself, and setting up a casual public meetup. Nobody needs to exchange deeply sensitive, private data or personal secrets with a complete stranger they just spotted on a radar grid.
- Keeping the Radar Safe: Because you are interacting with people you haven’t met before, leaving the encryption open on our servers allows UTurn to quickly intervene, block, and remove scammers, spammers, or creeps who try to misuse the local radar to harass other users.
Just like your main chats, UTurn does not store or log your Connect messages long-term, and we never use your conversations for tracking or advertising.
Moving to a Private Conversation
Connect chats are intentionally temporary and built for the first handshake.
If you meet up with someone from the radar, get along well, and decide you want to have a deeper, fully private conversation, you can transition out of the temporary Connect bubble at any time:
- Exchange your official 11-digit UTurn Numbers.
- Go to your main Chats tab and start a new direct conversation.
All standard 1-1 conversations inside the main app are fully end-to-end encrypted at the device level, giving you absolute, total privacy once a trusted connection is made.
Tips for Safe Connecting
When using Connect to meet new people, treat it just like meeting someone at a local park or cafe:
- Keep the initial chat casual and light until you feel comfortable.
- Avoid sharing highly specific personal details, your home address, or financial information in a Connect chat.
- Always use your best judgment when planning a real-world meetup.
