Direct Message Encryption
How UTurn uses end-to-end encryption to keep your one-on-one conversations completely private.
When you send a direct (one-on-one) message on UTurn, your privacy and security come first. We use end-to-end encryption (E2EE) to protect your conversations, ensuring that only you and the person you’re messaging can read what is being sent.
What Is End-to-End Encryption?
End-to-end encryption means your messages are locked on your device and can only be unlocked by the receiver’s device.
Even UTurn’s servers—the systems that deliver your messages—cannot read your conversations. We simply pass the encrypted messages along without ever seeing what is inside.
The Envelope Analogy: Think of it like sending a sealed envelope with a physical lock on it. Only the person with the matching key (your chat partner) can open it. Even the mail carrier (UTurn) has no way of seeing what is inside.
The Technology Behind It
UTurn uses advanced encryption technologies that are trusted worldwide for secure messaging:
- The Double Ratchet Algorithm: This ensures that every single message you send uses a unique, constantly changing encryption key. Even if someone somehow compromised a previous message, they could not use that information to unlock future messages.
- X3DH (Extended Triple Diffie-Hellman): This helps you and your contact establish a secure, encrypted session—even if one of you is offline when the conversation starts.
Together, these systems provide strong, modern encryption that adapts as your conversation continues.
What This Means for You
- Absolute Privacy: Only you and your contact can read your messages. Not UTurn, not hackers, not anyone else.
- Device-Level Locking: Your messages are locked before they ever leave your hardware.
- No Backdoors: UTurn does not store your encryption keys and cannot decrypt your messages—even if requested.
- Network Security: Whether you are on public Wi-Fi or mobile data, your messages stay completely protected.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can UTurn access my chats if needed?
No. We designed the system so that we do not have the technical ability to read your messages. That is the core definition of end-to-end encryption.
What if I switch devices?
When you sign in on a new device, a new encryption key is generated. UTurn handles this securely and will automatically notify your contact that your encryption key has changed.
Are group chats also end-to-end encrypted?
This article specifically covers one-on-one direct messages. Group chats utilize a separate encryption structure.
